Bernard Shaw's CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA
This 1898 play by George Bernard Shaw (premiered in 1906 at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway) has been re-written and published several times by the author to extend his copyright as long as possible. Unlike the fine Caedmon recording, this excellent BBC broadcast seems to be the only recording of the complete original introduction (by the God Ra). A portion of this Introduction opens Part One of the three film "Shakespeare Versus Shaw" comparison of the two authors' treatments of Caesar and Cleopatra from the Encyclopaedia Britannica (available elsewhere on Archive.org) a film series which stars Richard Kiley as Caesar, a role he had just played in HER FIRST ROMAN, a Broadway musical based on the Shaw play!
Run time 114:22
This broadcast (aired in England 27 August 1990) featured husband and wife acting team Alan Badell [Caesar] and Sarah Badell [Cleopatra]. It was directed by Ian Cotteril.
